All four Members have been singing in various organisations over the years, with Les and Terry singing in various quartets together over that time. Terry has also sung in quartet with Dean. Karen gained experience singing in various Ladies barbershop choruses and quartets. In May 2014 they got together and found that together they could blend quite naturally. They have gone from strength to strength and have had great success in various competitions since then.
Dean Whitehouse, the baritone (who cannot remember a time when he has not sung choral music !) is a very experienced Barbershop singer and has been a member of the Spirit of Harmony chorus, who are based in the Vale of York, for over 20 years. He is the Baritone section leader for the chorus, twice a Senior’s gold medallist, has directed several small choruses and also enjoys singing in various styles.
Les Whitworth is the husband of Karen and is the Bass of the quartet. He has been singing barbershop harmony for 28 years. Les also sings with the Spirit of Harmony and was the Bass section leader for many years. Les was the Chorus Director for Wigan chorus. He is also a Chorus Director with Main Street Sound.
Karen Whitworth is the wife of Les. She is the Tenor and has many years of Barbershop harmony singing experience, singing in various ladies choruses and quartets and won a Bronze Medal with one of her quartets, Live Coverage. Karen is also a Chorus director with Main Street Sound.
Terry Adamson is the father of Karen, therefore father in law of Les, making the quartet a family affair. Terry has been singing Barbershop harmony for 26 years and was one of the two founding members who started the Spirit of Harmony chorus in 1993 and was chorus director for the first five years and subsequently Lead Section Leader, Presentation Coach and assistant Chorus Director. Terry is also a Chorus Director with Main Street Sound .
Lynette – Tenor, Holly – Lead, Karen – Bass. Karen – Baritone,
Unique was created by four ladies from Main Street Sound, York’s Ladies Barbershop Chorus. After our first rehearsal it was clear that we had something special. Over the past year we have sung at several regional music festivals (in Holmfirth, Huddersfield, and Pontefract) gaining top marks at each. Unique was also delighted to win a silver medal at the International Quartet Competition in Calpe, Spain for the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) in April 2016. It’s been an absolute thrill singing together and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us!
